Our plastic surgeon in Bethesda, serving Washington, D.C., and the Chevy Chase area, uses state-of-the-art breast implants in many shapes and sizes to suit the particular needs of each patient. There are two basic types of breast implants, saline and silicone filled. Dr. Chester Haverback is very experienced with breast augmentation procedures and utilizes both types of implants.
Saline breast implants are the type most commonly used by Dr. Haverback. Composed of a silicone outer shell, the implant is filled with a salt-water solution. This is considered an advantage over silicone implants in that saline is easily absorbed by the body in the very unlikely event that an implant ruptures. However, saline implants have been known to demonstrate a rippling effect under the breast in some cases. There is also a risk of capsular contracture, or the formation of scar tissue around the implants.
Silicone breast implants are composed of an outer shell of silicone housing a silicone gel. They are known to have a more natural feel because the texture is more like that of human breast tissue. Silicone implants have less of a risk of rippling than saline implants; however they do have certain disadvantages. In the unlikely event that a silicone implant ruptures, it could go unnoticed for a period of time since the solution is a viscous gel. Silicone implants have also been known to cause capsular contracture. Although silicone implants went through a long period of controversy, and were even pulled from the market at one time, the Food and Drug Administration approved them for use in breast augmentation procedures in 2006.
In Dr. Haverback's Bethesda office, serving Washington D.C., Chevy Chase, and the surrounding region, specific breast implants and all aspects of the breast enlargement procedure will be discussed at your initial consultation with Dr. Haverback. He will go over the risks and benefits of both saline and silicone implants, and, together, you will decide which is the best option for you. Typically performed as an outpatient procedure with general anesthesia, breast augmentation begins with incisions placed in the armpit, under the crease of the breast, or in the areola. After making the incisions, Dr. Haverback will place the breast implants either behind the chest muscle or directly under the breast tissue. Again, exact placement will be decided before the procedure.
